Center for the Study of the National Guard

A Central Hub to Honor and Preserve the Guard’s Legacy

As the U.S. National Guard has evolved from “weekend warriors” to a formidable battlefield force, its remarkable journey deserves a dedicated home. Despite its rich 300-year history, the Guard has been without a central archive to capture and celebrate its contributions.

Recognizing this need, USM's Dale Center for the Study of War & Society and Center for Oral History & Cultural Heritage joined forces to document the Mississippi National Guard’s stories, studying the history of warfare and its influence on soldiers and civilians.

From this project, the need for a central hub became evident. In collaboration with Southern Miss and the National Guard Bureau, the Center will establish a central repository for archival materials and oral histories. This repository will function as a national resource for the study of the Guard’s past, present, and future.

"We want to make Southern Miss an academic home for past, present and future National Guard service personnel and their families. A place where their stories of service and sacrifice can be preserved and can be told."
